BBC Radio Two have announced the winners of their "Best ABBA Song" poll to mark fifty years since the spectacular victory of the Swedish supergroup at the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest, which propelled the band to worldwide stardom and a special place in the hearts of many LGBT+ people globally. The station will be broadcasting the full run down on Saturday 11th May, which is the day of this year's Eurovision Song Contest, also being carried by the network. The top five has been revealed however, to whet people's appetite for the special showcase programme. Presenter Gary Davies told the media website RSC Radio Today that there are some surprises with lesser known album tracks appearing amongst fans' favourite ABBA tunes. Number five is the brooding and mysterious "Day Before You Came", whilst at number four is a song about aging and maturing, "Slipping Through My Fingers" which appears on the album "Super Trouper". At number three is "Thank You for the Music", an anthem that was used as the sign off music by the hugely successful offshore pirate radio station Laser558 during the mid eighties. Haunting romantic song "The Winner Takes it All" is at number two, but the top slot is "Dancing Queen", a track that many people believe may not have been written about a woman at all, but a young gay man in a nightclub. Jeff Smith, Radio 2’s Head of Music said: “Radio 2 listeners’ love of ABBA has not diminished since they burst onto the music scene in the 1970s, and Dancing Queen is absolutely one of the most classic pop songs ever recorded.” The European Broadcasting Union, which represents national broadcasters and organises the Eurovision Song Contest, has now published details of all the performers at the 2024 Event, which is held in the Swedish coastal city of Malmo during the week leading up to the grand finale on May 11th.
