Euronews Cable TV channel reports that Poland's domination by a far right wing, illiberal conservative government, under the spectacularly misnamed Law and Justice Party is coming to an end, after the General Election in the country gave a new coalition of parties known as Civic Forum, an overall Parliamentary majority. The new Prime Minister is likely to be Donald Tusk. Although the parties that form the Forum coalition have some differences between them, the consensus amongst political watchers is that Poland's creeping fascism has - for now at least- been thwarted. A free press is likely to be reinstated. Broadcasters will again be allowed to criticise the government and opposition radio stations granted licenses. Abortion is likely to be liberalised, if not legalised completely. And LGBTQIA people can look forward to moderate progress and at least an end to the incitement to hatred that has permeated much of the outgoing government's discourse over the last eight years. As we reported in August, the status of LGBT+ rights in a country is almost always an insightful barometer of that country's democratic wellness. With rights now likely to be respected, Poland's democracy and human rights standing will improve, attracting business to the country.
