Many LGBTQIA activists will have noted with approval the disruption, backed by a broad coalition of animal rights groups, of the Grand National on 15th April. Whilst of course there are LGBTQIA people who back horse racing, and equally some animal rights people who have homophobic views, there are some undoubted broad lines of solidarity between our movements. Statistically, LGBTQIA people are more likely to be vegetarian, vegan or to be a part of some animal welfare group, whether it be the moderate campaign organisations like the RSPCA (which is still too radical for the insanely transphobic "Daily Telegraph" newspaper) through to the militant Hunt Saboteurs and Animal Liberation groups. Even those LGBTQIA people who did not support the disruption of the racing event, during which 118 people were arrested, still noted that the far right papers, including the aforementioned "Telegraph" and the "Daily Mail" were swivel eyed with rage at their posh paws day out being curtailed. With the somewhat more liberal "Guardian" newspaper noting that the Parliamentary standards committee is opening investigations into the activities of the Prime Minister, media watchers will be waiting to see if animal rights activists join transgender women in a new moral panic as the Tory press tries to deflect attention away from the government's sleaze.
