Marxist weekly newspaper The Weekly Worker, journal of the Communist Party of Great Britain (as distinct from the Communist Party of Britain, linked with the Morning Star paper), publishes a discursive essay by Mike McNair on the Westminster government’s picking of a fight with the Scottish Parliament over the Gender Recognition Act. Mr McNair argues for an abandonment of liberal alliances on equality and diversity and the adoption of a socialist programme for society. He writes “The way out of this trap is not to abandon the general agenda of “the emancipation of all human beings without distinction of sex or race” - as it is put in the Programme of the Parti Ouvrier that Marx helped to draft in 1880, but which now needs to be read to include disabilities, sexuality and gender identity, nationality and religious belief. It is rather to remember the rest of the formula:That the emancipation of the productive class is that of all human beings without distinction of sex or race; That the producers can be free only when they are in possession of the means of production (land, factories, ships, banks, credit)”.
