A coalition of groups held a rally in the Welsh capital Cardiff last weekend in favour of Independence for the country within the European Union. Adam Price, the leader of Welsh political party Plaid Cymru, and who is an out gay man, lead the parade, carrying a banner reading ““Annibyniaeth” or “Independence”. Staff from Cardiff City Council estimated that around five thousand people took part in the March, which was followed by a rally at which numerous political and cultural workers spoke, and was followed by parties and celebrations into the evening. The Yes Cymru campaign said that they wanted to the event to be a “loud and joyful celebration”. A recent YouGov poll on behalf of ITV Wales and Cardiff University found around a quarter of Welsh voters would back an independent Wales in a hypothetical referendum.
