The Centre for Countering Digital Hate and the Human Rights Campaign in the US have joined forces to publish a damning report on how major internet platforms such as Facebook and Twitter, who claim to have robust policies for dealing with homophobic and transphobic hate, continue to do nothing whilst a few extremist “superspreaders” load up the platforms with hate speech. Imran Ahmed, writing for the Centre for Countering Digital Hate says “Twitter and Facebook have been deathly silent in the face of our report. The platforms claim their rules prohibit this kind of targeted hate and harassment. In fact, they made announcements that they would take action against posts and accounts that repeatedly spread hate against LGBQT+ people. Yet our report exposed this to be a lie, and since then they have not acted. And in fact yesterday ‘grooming’ was trending on Twitter for four hours in the US as these hate merchants doubled down on their hateful rhetoric.” To support the campaign to get major internet players to deal with extremist material, visit https://counterhate.com/.
