Pink News reports that fans are as elated as they are surprised that the UK’s run of bad luck at the Eurovision Song Contest, with year on year coming last in the festival, was finally broken on Saturday night with Sam Ryder’s stunning anthem “spaceman” chalking up “douze points” from country after country as the results came in. Television presenter Graham Norton, overseeing the BBC coverage of the pan-European event, told viewers at one point “this is not a sketch, we really are winning” and elation was echoed by thousands of fans. In any normal year, the UK would have won the contest outright, but these are not normal times, and a massive public vote for the Ukraine saw the beleagured country take the top position with over six hundred points. Nevertheless, second place elated UK Eurofans. “Wasn’t this the best Eurovision for years?” tweeted Cheryl Baker, who won Eurovision for the UK in 1981 as part of Bucks Fizz. “Not just because the brilliant UK song came second, but it was a shot of love, joy, inclusivity and friendship. If only the world acted like Eurovision. It would be a kinder, happier and safer place.” Well said, Cheryl.
