The director of of a top Disney Pixar movie, released last year, has said that reading it as a gay romance is one possible way of looking at the portrayal of difference and finding ones place in society. "Luca" which hit screens in June of 2021, follows a seamonster who has taken human form, and his unfolding friendship with another human sea monster as they travel around the beautiful Italian countryside. Enrico Casarosa, the movie's director, now says that he would be happy for LGBTQIA people to read into the film a queer romance, according to Gay Times magazine. He said “I felt really honoured and I don’t like to say yes or no. I can say, well, that’s not how we wrote it. It wasn’t my experience, but I love that that metaphor is reading in all these different ways.”
