Since at least the nineteenth century, aggressive preaching has been illegal in the UK, even during more religious periods than at present. Newswire Pink News reports that on August 29th, a forty year old fundamentalist Christian was detained after shouting and haranguing shoppers going about their lawful and peaceful business in Briggate, a major shopping thoroughfare in Leeds. The man, who referred to unmarried women as “whores” and reeled off long lists of people who according to him were bound for hellfire in a handbasket, including pagans, atheists, Jews, non believers and homosexuals, was led away by two police officers and was captured still screaming in religious fervour by a local television station. LGBTQIA and womens activists were delighted to note that before his arrest, the man had been surrounded by a large group of ordinary Leeds residents who told him his extreme religion and his homophobic, misongynist views were not wanted in the city.
