The Metro newspaper reports that a community radio station in Sheffield has been censured by the broadcasting regulator OFCOM for transmitting an Islamic musical form that encouraged people to take extreme action. Link FM is a low power station transmitting in the city. It broadcat a nasheed, which is a piece of musical chanting in the Islamic tradition, which extolled the virtues of Jihadism. The Pakistani Islamic Centre, which operates the station, apologised and said that the extreme opinion expressed in the brief piece, was an oversight. Media watchers online noted that for OFCOM the balancing of the right of free speech with the need to protect society from religious extremists was a continuing challenge.
