The very well loved magazine The New Yorker, once spoofed on ITV-2's “Family Guy” as a posh club of improbably well off people, often carries very interesting social and political articles. In its current edition, the magazine meets with Pastor William J Barber of the GreenLeaf Christian Church in North Carolina. Pastor Barber explains that conservatives are very confused about religion. They have a vision of a gun toting, white supremacist, minority hating Jesus who is totally at odds with what the gospels say and what historians know about the life of Jesus of Nazareth. Instead, his church and sermons are steeped in social justice, organising campaigns and food drives for the poor and excluded. The GreenLeaf Christian church which he leads says “we declare that the moral public concerns of our faith traditions are how our society treats the poor, women, LGBTQ people, children, workers, immigrants, communities of color, and the sick--the people whom Jesus calls “the least of these.” Our moral traditions point to equal protection under the law, the desire for peace within and among nations, the dignity of all people, and the responsibility to care for our common home”.
