Popular US gay website Queerty was busy late last week, after the debacle on Capitol Hill when supporters of outgoing President Donald Trump beseiged the very heart of US government. Many media covered the incident, with commentators across the globe expressing a variety of emotions and concerns – for some continental news channels, it was nothing short of an abortive and slovenly attempt at coup d'etat, a poor echo of Mussolini's March on Rome to establish his hegemony. However, Queerty also noted that the motivations of the various factions that sparked the invasion of the Congressional buildings on Wednesday last were very mixed, ranging from fundamentalists to gun groups, to openly White Supremacist, and believe it or not, a lone gay rainbow flag, from a man apparently representing the small group called “Gays for Trump”. Gays for Trump remain as controversial in the US as right wing gay organisations in the UK, and their place in the wider LGBTQ movement is highly contested. There was much discussion on the Queerty moderated comments threads in which supporters and detractors of Trump discussed how the protests came about and whether law enforcement reacted differently to Pride or Black Lives Matter demonstrations.
