Them, an online portal for communities that are outside of heteronormative and cisgender patriarchy, reports that despite World Rugby sports bodies deciding that transgender women are not safe to play the contact game, the United Kingdom bodies are to dissent. The RFU, which stands for Rugby Football Union, is the governing body for Rugby Union, one of two types of the sport that developed in nineteenth century Britain. They say that they need to see further evidence before they can rule that trans women pose a physical threat to cisgender women, and until such evidence emerges, then there is no change to their rules. World Rugby had ruled that there was quote a “risk of significant injury” presented by having transwomen on the field. This decision has been criticised by sports analysists for being based on flawed evidence. ““There is no peer-reviewed, scientific evidence to justify a ban which would only be harmful to trans and gender diverse people,” remarked one open letter in the sports press. The Rugby Football Union in the UK said ““The RFU is committed to LGBTQ+ inclusion as well as safety and fairness across all levels of the game,” and added “ we propose to assess the current evidence alongside safety concerns that have been raised and also undertake further consultation with players in the women’s game to understand their views.”
