The Irish Post, a community newspaper for the Irish in Britain, says that a woman from Tipperary in the Republic has been appointed to the rank of commander in the Irish Navy. This is the first time such an important rank has been held by a woman. Roberta O'Brien has been in the Republic's Navy since 1995 and was previously the first female captain of a warship. The Official Irish Navy website paid tribute to Ms O'Brien and wished her well in her new appointment.
