The Irish World newspaper, which is a community paper for Irish people living in Britain, reports that Amnesty International has called on the UK government to intercede in Northern Ireland's politics and grant samesex marriage as well as the right to abortion. The province of Northern Ireland, which was split from the Republic of Ireland after the events of the Irish Civil War, is part of the UK, and has its own legislative assembly. However, the Assembly, which is located at Stormont, has been suspended and on ice for the last two years since a power sharing agreement between the Unionist DUP Party and the Republican Sinn Fein broke down. The Irish World notes that part of the stalemate rests on the fact that the DUP is highly conservative on social issues, whereas Sinn Fein is more liberal and supports marriage equality as well as reproductive rights. Amnesty International, a long standing human rights organisation, has said that the Parliament in Westminster should take control of affairs and guarantee human rights for the Northern Ireland gay and lesbian population.
