Humanists UK, formerly the British Humanist Association, is an organisation with a long tradition of supporting LGBT civil rights. Indeed, the Humanist movement, which seeks to build a secular, rational world in which religious superstition no longer controls vast swathes of the population, has supported gay and trans issues since the middle part of the twentieth century. Now, Humanists UK have appointed a person with a long association with Bristol and the West Country as their new President. Professor Alice Roberts may be known to you – she started her career on Channel Four’s Time Team programme as an Osteo-archaeologist. Since then, she has fronted many science and history programmes for Channel Four, the BBC and Sky Networks. With an interest in the human sciences, Professor Roberts is known for her easy going manner as well as her advocacy of scientific principles and awareness in the public sphere. She was for a while based at the University of Bristol, but is currently located at the University of Birmingham. You will be able to see Professor Roberts this coming holiday season as she will be presenting the Royal Institute Christmas Lectures on the BBC Four television channel. These air over several nights between Christmas and the New Year.
