An unprecedented coalition of LGBT and general companies, ranging from the lesban magazine DIVA to Channel Four Television, and from Vice Magazine to Lloyds Bank, have joined forces to back Stonewall’s campaign for transgender equality before the law. Stonewall is urging as many people as possible to feed back their support for the government’s proposed reforms to the Gender Recognition Act. Ranged against them are an unlikely alliance consisting of 1970s style gynocentric feminists and right wing moralists, which has been described as the “hateful axis”. They have taken illegal actions including vandalising the front of Stonewall’s central London office and trampling over the rainbow flag at the London Pride Parade in July, the latter act being spectacularly misjudged and counterproductive. The new coalition of trans friendly organisations aims to take the initiative back and mobilise the liberal majority of LGBT people and allies. Visit the Stonewall website for more information on what you can do.
