LGBT commentators online and in other media are not impressed that Robbie Williams, former member of the gay friendly boyband Take That and late nineties solo pop star, is to open the World Cup in Russia. Russia is commonly considered by LGBT activsts to be deeply homophobic, and to have enshrined straight supremacism in their legal system.
The dissident radio station Radio Free Europe reports that "Williams and Russian soprano Aida Garifullina will perform ahead of the opening game of the competition between hosts Russia and Saudi Arabia at Moscow's 81,000-seat Luzhniki Stadium."
