Several HIV activists and bloggers have urged LGBTQ people and their allies to make a conscious effort to support the forthcoming demonstration and rally to mark the seventieth anniversary of the creation of the National Health Service. Initiated by the Atlee government in the face of tremendous opposition by Doctors, the NHS was part of the post war settlement in which key provision of social services would be taken on by the state so as the hardships of the 1930s would never reoccur. The national demonstration on June 30th, brings together trade unions, health activists, political parties and NHS staff themselves to make the case for a well funded public health system. HIV groups have noted that the treatment of HIV has been very different in the UK than in the United States, where the lack of national health care meant incredible deprivations suffered by the gay, black and latino communities most impacted by the health crisis.
