Queer cultural wire, Them.COM reports that we are, despite the nervousness of a Trump and populist era, still enjoying a golden age of LGBTQIA representation in movies and on the television. With its roots in theatre, the telly has always been a relatively safe space for LGBTQIA+ people to seek employment even during decades when homosexuality and transgender issues were off the agenda due to network nerviness. "From feel-good sitcoms to wild campy reality shows, 2025 was quite the year for queer TV." So say the journalists from Them, who are marking the start of the festive season, with a look back on the year just gone. They report "in its annual survey of the state of LGBTQ+ representation on TV, GLAAD found that there was a 4% increase in queer and trans characters across new shows on primetime scripted broadcast, primetime scripted cable, and scripted streaming original series. Trans people specifically made up 6.7% of the total characters, representing an increase of nine new characters from last year."
