If revenge is a dish best served cold, then the LGBTQIA+ community of Brazil, alongside the left, progressives, environmentalists, indigenous peoples, women and everyone else once targetted for harassment by former President Jair Bolsanaro, must have feasted on Wednesday night. The BBC News Channel reported that the former President, who encouraged violence against minorities, has been sentenced to twenty seven years in prison for after being found guilty of plotting a military coup. A panel of five Supreme Court justices handed down the sentence just hours after they had convicted the former leader. They ruled he was guilty of leading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Bolsonaro will, noted BBC Radio 4, likely die in prison. His lawyers say they will appeal the sentence. The right wing regime in the United States meddled in the courts ruling, saying that it was a witch-hunt. The Brazilian authorities told American to leave other countries alone.
