Music Industry Unites for Trans+ People

10/05/2025

Here's some much needed uplifting news, courtesy of the independent music and arts magazine Crack, which you can find distributed across the city of Bristol via record shops, independent bookstores and community centres.

Crack reports "

a group of artists and music industry professionals have penned an open letter expressing solidarity with the trans community.

On 16 April this year, the Supreme Court gave its ruling on the meaning of sex in the application of the Equality Act 2010. The Court ruled that the terms “woman” and “sex” only refer to a biological woman and to biological sex, and that the legal definition of a woman did not include transgender women who hold gender recognition certificates (GRCs).

This means that trans women can legally be excluded from women-only spaces in the UK.

“The UK music industry is a vibrant, diverse landscape that thrives on creativity and inclusivity. We have long celebrated a multitude of voices and identities, and the music industry here in the UK is one of our most trailblazing and culturally vital assets – one which trans, intersex and non-binary people are woven into in every aspect of the industry, past, present and future. We must now urgently work to ensure that our trans, non-binary, and intersex colleagues, collaborators, and audiences are protected from discrimination and harassment in all areas of the industry – whether in studios, at venues, in offices, or at festivals,” the statement reads.

“We stand with the many voices who have condemned both the ruling and the EHRC guidance, highlighting the negative consequences that both will have for all individuals and the particular harm that trans, non-binary, and intersex people face as a result.”

Artists including I. JORDAN, JADE, Princess Julia, Babymorocco, Charli xcx, Shygirl, Neneh Cherry, TAAHLIAH and Lava La Rue have signed, as well as a range of editors, creatives, publicists, managers, and more.

Crack Magazine stands in solidarity with the trans community."
