BBC Radio 6 is the BBC network's dedicated independent, alternative and "serious" popular music listeners station. Since 2002, at the station's launch, the much loved gay performer Tom Robinson has been amongst their flagship presenters, using his knowledge of the music industry and contacts to give voice to unsigned and underheard bands. Now, however, at the age of 75, Mr Robinson is moving on from BBC Radio 6 Music and will be presenting his final show on 1st June. He will however, return for special event programming. Radio listeners will miss Mr Robinson's good humour personability when presenting, and many up and coming bands will miss his kindness and willingness to support their careers. Here is the press release from Tom:
My Sunday evening request show Now Playing @6Music is to end - with a final show on Sunday June 1st, my 75th birthday. My joint statement with the BBC Radio 6 Music press office is:
"It's been a privilege to host shows every week on 6 Music since it started in 2002. During that time our listeners' passion for fresh, adventurous music has seen us through thick and thin - and eventually helped us become the biggest digital station in the country.
Our listeners' generous support for the artists we introduced on my shows over the last 23 years has helped many music careers. And more recently I'm hugely grateful to our NowPlaying community for sharing their musical expertise - and hilarious snippets of kitchen life - every weekend.
Although I'm sad to be handing on the Sunday night baton, I'll be presenting other occasional shows on 6 Music in the coming months, starting with four hour-long specials for 6 Music's Loud & Proud season in the first week of June."
From June 8 Mary Anne Hobbs will be hosting her own new show in the 6-8pm slot on Sundays. Tom Ravenscroft will also be leaving the station, and will be replaced on New Music Fix Daily by Nathan Shepherd. For the full official announcement see the BBC Radio 6 Music Instagram account".
Mr Robinson will be touring intimate venues across the UK this autumn.
