The BBC News Channel reported on Sunday 29th September that Phillip Schofield who came out on the television programme "This Morning" on ITV before falling from popularity after having an "unwise but not illegal" affair with a young male colleague, is to make a final television programme. Mr Schofield has filmed a desert island diary which will be aired on Channel Five in the UK. In it he says that coming out later in life has led to anguish for him. But he also defends his right to have a relationship with a much younger man. Mr Schofield also says that this documentary may his final appearance on British television and that he might well resign completely from our screens. Mr Schofield does have his defenders. Peter Tatchell pointed out that however foolish his relationship with a young colleague might have been, it was ultimately nobody's business but their own. Mr Tatchell also noted that there was an undercurrent of homophobia in the way the right wing newspapers reported on Schofield's difficulties.
