Linking Movements with LGBT+ Eco Activism

10/01/2025

International petition website for the LGBTQIA communities, Allout.org, have for some time been warning that LGBT+ people need to get involved in wider movements for environmental and social change, as our lives are often considered expendable by not just fascists, but by climate deniers and our  livelihoods are more at stake in the chaos caused by human made climate change (well, let's face it, is mostly man made pollution isn't it?).  Ana Clara for AllOut.org, explains how the community faces a dual risk from environmental factors.  She writes "when the water rose above the roofs and the rain didn't stop for weeks in the south of Brazil, we watched in despair as millions of lives changed forever.   It wouldn't surprise me if every single Brazilian shed at least some tears when seeing elderly people being rescued, families losing everything, and children separated from their parents.   The floods that devastated millions of lives in the south of Brazil earlier this year were historic. But the tragedy didn’t stop there. Now, we're hearing about an aftermath of violence in shelters and LGBT+ people being denied help.  Climate catastrophes always harm marginalised communities the most. Can you imagine being denied medical care or being discriminated against in shelters after losing your entire home? This is what LGBT+ victims of one of the worst floods in Brazil's history are facing.  We are joining forces with LGBT+ organisations on the ground in Brazil to secure food, shelter, clothing, and medical assistance for the LGBT+ victims who need it the most.".  To get involved in this fundraising campaign, visit Allout.org and remember that when the going gets tough, our communities get going.
