The ecological activist group Extinction Rebellion have launched a "porky pie" award to recognise the most egregious examples of distortion, scaremongering and downright lies from the British right wing newspapers like the Telegraph and the Daily Mail when considering environmental issues and activism. Why does this affect LGBTQ+ people you may ask. Well, these papers have a long history of homophobia and more recently transgender bashing that dates back decades. They have stoked fear and division and arguably have contributed to violence against minority groups. That's why many LGBTQ+ people applauded when eco activists took direct action protests to the offices of these disreputable rags. Extinction Rebellion say "The Porky Pie Press Awards celebrate the very worst newspaper climate and ecological emergency coverage over the past year. In 2023, 85% of Telegraph opinion pieces were anti-green. The Daily Mail buried a global report by top scientists beneath a story about pensioners arguing over geraniums.
