Philadelphia Gay News reports that LGBTQIA+ people in the city's "gaybourhood" have joined forces with anti-gentrification activists, local businesses and leaders of the local Chinatown to oppose plans for a huge stadium for the local basketball team which would be built right in the middle of these two historic quarters of the city, and which are considered culturally important to many members of the Chinese and LGBTQIA+ communities. Despite developers speaking about the project as though it’s a “done deal,” Apurva Tandon, one of the protest group’s organizers, said the proposed project has not been approved and faces both logistical and legislative challenges. Concerns raised include the threat of violence from rowdy, straight basketball fans, the fate of small businesses who are often priced out when arenas are built, and the impact of traffic, noise and congestion on the streets of districts that many people call home.
