The pop artist Chappell Roan, who takes their inspiration from LGBTQIA+ culture, is the front cover star of the New Musical Express this month. The magazine says "The 25-year-old from LA via smalltown Missouri makes fun, flashy, in-your-face party music that has queerness stamped through it like a stick of rock. When people hear her name, she wants their first thought to be “drag queen”. In December, she sold out two headline shows at iconic London LGBTQ+ venue Heaven. “That was so affirming for me because Heaven is famously so joyous,” she says. “And I felt honoured to be playing where Freddie Mercury used to party.” Roan speaks about her debt to the LGBTQIA+ community, and to gay and trans clubs. She also talks of her conservative upbringing and the need to find a new spirituality away from religious fundamentalism. The full interview is available to read in the magazine which is distributed nationwide at record shops and countercultural institutions and is online at https://www.nme.com/features/the-cover/the-cover-chapell-roan-interview-...
