Football Clubs United to Fight Homophobia

05/03/2024

The Daily Mirror says that Football V Homophobia is taking on a month of action, to mark February as the birthday month of the late Justin Fashanu, the first professional football player to come out and the first black player to command a transfer fee of more than one million pounds, such was his talent and ability.  Campaign lead Lou Englefield said "we've seen some incredible changes, in the UK particularly. When we first started, there no LGBT fan groups, so no visible presence of LGBT people in stadia.... But then at the same time, we now find ourselves in very divisive times. We're seeing a huge increase in homophobia. During the Women's World Cup, homophobic abuse was the largest form of online abuse targeting footballers and that's a disgrace. So a real mixed bag."
