Russian television is bigoted: well, we all know this. Western media networks such as Radio Free Europe have long since reported on the bias of the Kremlin owned media, not only over the country’s war crimes in the Ukraine, but also against anyone who doesn’t fit into their worldview. The Independent Newspaper and the Daily Beast reported on Russia-1, the Kremlin’s most prominent mouthpiece channel, reporting on the new White House Press Secretary, Karine Jean-Pierre. The channel attacked her for not being a “white, heterosexual male”. Meanwhile, the Echo of Moscow radio station, one of the last independent media to remain on the air in the city, has failed in its attempt to reverse a government edict that closed it down. All legally sanctioned media in Russia is now effectively under the control of the state. However, as our own media correspondent Terry pointed out, there are still glimmers of hope – underground magazines and newspapers are circulating, and pirate radio stations, who are called “radio hooligans” by the Russian state, are still broadcasting.
