Tributes for Civil Rights and LGBT Ally Harry

28/04/2023

Tributes have been paid to singer, actor and entertainer Harry Belafonte, who has died at the age of 97.  Mr Belafonte was unashamedly progressive in his politics throughout his career, and was a close confidante of the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr.  He was also an ally of the LGBT+ movement, serving as a Grand Marshall of the New York City Pride parade in 2013.  Furthermore, he served as honorary co-chairperson of the Women's March on Washington, around which much protest against the election of Donald Trump coalesced in 2016.  The huge contributions of Mr Belafonte to politics and to a culture of resistance to US Christian fundamentalist nationalism, cannot be overstated.  A detailed article on his life and times is online at the free encyclopaedia, Wikipedia, at this link:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Belafonte
