Joy FM in Melbourne, Australia, has rebranded to accommodate the age of podcasts and internet delivered content. The station, which began broadcasting in 1993 is Australia’s only LGBTQIA+ radio station, and is part of a lively community radio movement in the country. But now, in addition to its regular programming on 94.9 FM, the station falls into part of Joy Media. The network says “JOY Media is Australia’s not for profit LGBTIQA+ media organisation. JOY Media represents the people, stories, news, music, and lived experiences of Australia’s LGBTIQA+ community and our allies.” The station has also added a statement of awareness of the native Australian lands from which they transmit, noting “JOY acknowledges that we work and broadcast from the lands of the Yalukit-Willam Clan of the Boon Wurrung Peoples. We also acknowledge the traditional owner of lands throughout Australia – and pay our respects to elders past and present, as well as brotherboys and sistergirls of the LGBTIQA+ Community”.
