Gay newswire Pink News and the LGBT+ newspaper the Sydney Star Observer both report on the case of a fake transphobic letter which was published by a local newspaper in the town of Launceston, which is in Tasmania. The writer of the outrageously transphobic letter, which falsely claimed that a trans person had provocatively undressed in front of children at a leisure centre, has not been identified. However, the editor of the newspaper has been removed from his job for not checking the veracity of the sources. Pink News notes “Rose Boccalatte, spokesperson for the Equality Tasmania group, said: “The impact of the letter on trans and gender diverse communities hasn’t been acknowledged. The letter has caused a lot of hurt because it insinuated there is an inherent danger with trans women using women’s facilities and because it was fabricated.”
