Parties Unite to Slam MSP Anti-Drag Remarks

11/06/2023

The Scottish National Party LGBTQI Group, "Out for Independence" and the Green Party Scotland's LGBT+ Group together with activists from Labour, the Liberal Democrats and smaller progressive parties have all come together to question Douglas Ross MSP, the leader of the Conservative Party in Scotland, over his suggestion that Drag Queen Story House in Elgin Library was inappropriate for children.  The open letter says in part, "It is shameful that Ross views the mere existence of LGBTQIA people as being inappropriate for children..... he and other Conservative MSPs are perpetuating slurs against our community.  Drag js an art form. It is a part of our culture.  Our existence is not a threat to anyone. With hate crime on the rise, increased attacks on minority spaces and near constant vitriol in right wing papers and on the internet, now more than ever we need our electred representatives to set and example of inclusion and human decency.  .... These attacks on the LGBTQ+ community are part of a global resurgence of hatred.  We need more than words and reflection.  We need action in solidarity".
