Visiting Taiwan, the Defiant Democratic State

19/12/2023

On Friday Night, 10th November, Channel Four's Unreported World series visited Taiwan, the independent and democratic Western island separated from Communist China and which the mainland has long coveted. Reporter Krishnan Guru-Murthy met with Taiwanese activists and "preppers" - people who feel that an invasion from the mainland could happen in the future - and discussed the state to which Taiwanese democracy could defend itself.  Amongst the people profiled were a lesbian couple whose freedom in marriage equality and to express themselves would be compromised if the communists took over.  Wikipedia notes that currently, Taiwan's record is considered the most progressive on any Asian country on LGBTQIA issues.  Taipei Pride attracts around one hundred and seventy thousand participants and is therefore the largest such event in Asia.
