LGBTQIA Newswire Pink News speaks with Addi, the current President of Oxford University LGBTQIA+ Society. Perhaps not surprisingly, given the stoking of the issue of trans law reform by right wing culture war newspapers such as the Daily Telegraph and the Daily Mail, Addi has received death threats from the anti-transgender movement. “It is not something you can really prepare for because when it actually happens, it feels much more serious and much more alarming,” the DPhil student in politics said. Thames Valley Police are investigating the death threat. Addi said this level of violent abuse and threats is not something the local community or student society has experienced before, leaving LGBTQ+ members in the city “shocked”. Addi also condemned “cynical exploitation by the (right wing) media to stoke the cultural war”. The Oxford Student the university's main independent newspaper, adds that the British right wing papers are largely responsible for the death threats. noting "The Telegraph wrote about the personal details of the LGBT+ society’s President Addy, and Zoë-Rose , the society’s Secretary and de-facto Vice President". The Oxford Union, a debating society, which has often been described as "white, middle class and arrogant", has invited former an anti-transgender feminist to speak during the Summer Term and this has led to the current row fuelled by the press. That speaker, one Kathleen Stock, did condemn the death threats, and distanced herself from the right wing who were making them.
