Helping Trans People in the Ukraine

30/03/2022

Satellite and cable news channel Euronews reports that many trans people are finding it difficult to cross borders out of Ukraine if their forms of identification do not correspond to their actual gender. Some people are therefore trying to cross borders having destroyed their forms of ID, but this is not recommended by charities and NGOs working with members of the trans community to get to safety. An alternative recommendation by some groups is to get to the Western parts of the Ukraine where there is less fighting and where there is distance from the Russian attacks on the country. Trans people have made some progress in recent years in Ukraine, and some of the worst abuses of the medical establishment have been abolished, such as the old requirement that trans people spend a period of time in a psychiatric hospital before undergoing gender confirmation surgery. But prejudice and legal hurdles still exist.
