Pink News says that the Daily Mail was slammed by a wide variety of LGBTQIA+ and progressive voices for what India Willoughby described as trying to "monetise" the murder of Brianna Ghey, whose death in February 2023 sent shockwaves through the community. Ms Willoughby said that the "scum" at the Daily Mail " waged a “relentless campaign demonising trans people” only to then “monetise their murder as entertainment”. She called for a new press regulator that can bring the extremist right wing papers to heel after their shameful records of interfering with elections, promoting homophobia, transphobia and racism. Social commentator Fancy Brenda pulled no punches when she said "Genuinely fucking sickening how the Daily Mail enthusiastically promotes hatred against trans people for years on end, then sensationalises the murder of a trans girl to sell their shitty fucking podcast," whilst Mango Whizz noted "I know that it’s the Daily Mail and we should expect this – but the gall of a profoundly transphobic paper using feigned sorrow over the death of a trans girl to promote their damn podcast, days after helping hateful Tory minister Kemi Badenoch whip up even more hatred against trans kids is sickening". Trans Media Watch previously referred to the coverage of trans issues by the UK media, following Ghey’s death, as a “new low”.
