The Women's World Cup was won by Spain in a tense but celebrated match against England on Sunday. However, as LGBT+ sports news site Outsports notes, the real victory from the women's world cup was the number of Gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans and queer soccer players who are publicly out. Some ninety six in total participated in the women's world cup. This is far higher than in any previous world cup and constitutes around one in eight players. In addition, at least three head coaches are publicly out: Pia Sundhage (Brazil), Bev Priestman (Canada) and Hege Riise (Norway). A full list of the talented players who were out at the cup is available at Outsports.com.
