Billie Jean King is Still Lesbian Icon

20/09/2021

Album rock station Radio Caroline notes that it was on 20th September 1973, Billie Jean King became an icon for women's tennis by beating the male fifty five year old tennis legend Bobby Riggs in a match that had been described as the “Battle of the Sexes” event. Riggs had made various chauvinistic comments about the women's game, but was defeated by King 6–4, 6–3, 6–3.  King came out as lesbian in 1981, and has since championed women's and LGBTQIA equality globally. She married her long term partner Ilana Kloss, in 2018.
