Secularists Raise Concerns over Circumcision

04/02/2024

Doctor Antony Lempert has written a new report for the National Secular Society on the alleged failure of professional medical bodies such as the GMC and even the British Medical Association to adequately push back against religious groups that advocate the circumcision of infant boys.  There has been a growing movement from secular charities since the seventies expressing concern about the effects of circumcision and there are a fair number of gay and bi men who have supported this movement.  Doctor Lempert writes "for boys, there are practically no legal or medical restrictions on who, where or why the procedure is carried out. In the UK, we know it is regularly carried out by religious clerics with no medical qualifications, in non-clinical and often unsuitable settings including people's homes, just to satisfy parents' religious or cultural beliefs."  The full hard hitting essay on the subject is available at https://www.secularism.org.uk/
