Moderate Tory Cameron Returns to Cabinet

Parliament

01/01/2024

The Independent newspaper reports that several dozen Conservative MPs were on hand to welcome centrist former Prime Minister David Cameron back to a position in Cabinet.  Mr Cameron has been appointed Foreign Secretary.  Several former ministers from Lord Cameron’s era were also in attendance at a political meeting, including his successor in Downing Street Theresa May.  Mr Cameron is widely perceived as being much more moderate than the more strident right wing voices in the Cabinet.  He was, for example, the Prime Minister that saw marriage equality finally be implemented in the UK, and his tenure as Prime Minister saw an emphasis on building institutions of society rather than the more naked aggressive capitalism of the present Tory leadership.  Whether his moderating influence will be enough to bring electoral recovery for the beleaguered Tories remains to be seen.
