LGBTQ Nation newswire reports that an unhinged right wing extremist who planned to run for the Republican Party as candidate for Missouri Secretary of State, came in a miserable sixth place out of eight candidates. Valentina Gomez, who ran in the GOP primary for Missouri Secretary of State, built her campaign around her hatred of LGBTQ+ people. She made “Don’t be weak and gay” a slogan of her campaign, she called LGBTQ+ people “groomers” and “pedophiles” repeatedly, she burned LGBTQ+ books with a flamethrower, and she said anti-LGBTQ+ slurs in videos posted to social media. With 99% of votes counted on August 8th, the Kansas City Star reports that Gomez got 47,931 votes – or just 7.5% – in the primary, putting her behind five other candidates. State Senator Denny Hoskins got 24.4% of the vote and has been declared the winner by the AP. Gomez went to ground in the wake of the election result, and the thorough rejection of her policies by the public. However, some people are also asking how she was even able to become a candidate when she is so clearly mentally unwell. There were calls online for a more rigorous mental health legislative framework on a federal level, that can deal with people who are delusional, self-aggrandising and narcissistic.
