Independent Radio News says that the UK government has issued a formal apology for a past policy of not employing gay, lesbian or bisexual diplomats. The policy, which was rescinded in 1991, was in place because during a period when society and government was more homophobic than at present, Whitehall was afraid that Russian or other hostile powers would use diplomats sexuality to blackmail them.
