Have you ever come across the Voluntary Human Extinction Movement? No? Well, it's culturally if not politically queer in the sense, that like many radical gay, bi and pan people, the movement is dedicated to changing the societal pressure to reproduce on couples, regardless of their sexuality or gender identity. The Movement, which is actually more of a philosophy sometimes called Anti-Natalism, is active online and is sometimes linked with deep green ecology, pointing out that each new mouth to feed in the world produces massive strain on the Earth's fragile resources. During the period of New Queer Activism during the early nineties, the extremely radical group Homocult often tilted at reproduction as an ideology in their provocative posters. Not all Anti-Natalists want to see the human race die out, and so the movement is more of a grand coalition of people with concerns over unbridled heterosexual reproduction and the environment. Amy Fleming has recently met some of the people proposing the philosophy in an article for the Guardian newspaper. Check out our website for useful links to her article and to the movements associated with it.
