A coalition between the Yorkshire Branch of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, known more affectionately as CND, and Black Lives Matter, have commemorated the speech given to the first anti-nuclear weapons protestors in the United Kingdom by Bayard Rustin, the black gay civil rights leader, who predicted the rise of the Black Power and Gay Liberation movements at the end of the sixties. In 1958, Rustin spoke to thousands of peace campaigners as they were about to embark upon CND’s first Aldermaston march. This historic anecdote represents one of many moments where the peace movement and movements against racism have joined hands. The webinar hosted by CND took place this week, and should in future be preserved on the organisation's website. They add “we week to build dialogue between these two historic social movements, mapping their solidarities, common histories and shared interests”.
