Feminist author Margaret Atwood, a long standing ally of the LGBTQIA community and writer of many successful books over the last fifty years, is to be recognised for her contribution to literature by a Scottish university. Atwood will receive an honorary doctorate of letters from the University of St Andrews on November 29th. Atwood has published 17 novels and eight children’s books but is best known for The Handmaid’s Tale, which has since been adapted into an award-winning television series. The highly prescient and dystopian book successfully predicted the dangers of Christian fundamentalism in the US. Atwood has spoken many times on politics and society. She has also stated that she is a feminist who supports the right of transgender people to exist.
