The Ancient Egyptian Podcast is one of the web's premier programmes on an endlessly fascinating subject. Hosted by New Zealander Dominic Perry, who brought his twin passions for podcasting and the ancient civilization of the Nile Valley together, the accessible podcast has recently interviewed acclaimed Egyptologist at the University of Los Angeles, Doctor Kara Cooney. Cooney has published extensively and worked on television documentaries, fronting her own series, Out of Egypt which first aired on the Discovery Channel. Doctor Cooney has more recently specialised in the role of female rulers in Egypt's long history. Jokingly, she remarked to Perry that she was being “haunted” it would seem by the eminent eighteenth dynasty Pharaoh Hatshepsut, since her work time and again comes back to the role this very important female ruler represents for Ancient Egypt. Hatshepsut ruled from around 1479 BC to 1458. Cooney's published work includes a review of Egypt's several female Pharaohs , entitled When Women Ruled the World. In the podcast with Dominic, Doctor Cooney discussed at length what the reigns of these ancient women tell us about today's patriarchal power structures. And they also tell us about how female rulers in today's world operate. The Ancient Egyptian Podcast has its own classy website and whether you are a connoisseur of ancient history or just dabbling in the past to entertain yourself in these continuing times of lockdown, then check it out for something really engaging and stimulating you can check out with your morning coffee or on an evening with your headphones on.
