Nadya Tolokonnikova from the feminist and LGBTQIA supporting punk rock group Pussy Riot has spoken candidly to The Guardian newspaper about the conflict in the Ukraine. She says that she is “in a panic, I’m crying every day. I don’t think it was in any sense necessary, I don’t think it was in any sense logical. It wasn’t something that had to happen, it’s a disaster that will end thousands of people’s lives. I’m freaking out.” Ms Tolokonnikova served two years in a harsh Russian prison for taking part in a protest action criticising President Putin and the viciously homophobic Russian Orthodox Church. And yet she remains unbroken. “You cannot play nice with Putin”, she says, adding “Dictators act a lot like prison wardens. They treat kindness as weakness.” To read more of Tolokonnikova’s thoughts on the global situation, visit www.theguardian.com.
