Trans Track Sparks Uni Debate

26/05/2017

A group of students at a Canadian University have , according to the newswire Pink News, issued an apology for playing a song they described as “transphobic” during an event for new students. The track in question was “Walk on the Wild Side”, a well known celebration of queer 1970's culture by Lou Reed, from his album “Transformer”. The student body concluded that the 1973 track, which became a hit for Reed, was essentially fetishising members of the New York underground community, including its trans subjects. Other students however, pointed out that Reed himself had a transgender partner during this period and that the song was intended as a ground breaking celebration of queer and alternative cultures.
